La Fille Mal Gardee

The Birmingham Royal Ballet return to Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall from June 25-28 for their latest eagerly-awaited visit to the venue.

One of the world’s leading classical ballet companies, the Theatre Royal Nottingham is their only touring venue in the East Midlands.

The internationally acclaimed and award-winning ballet company will visit with Frederick Ashton’s classic ballet of rural bliss, the ever-popular La Fille mal gardée.

A firm favourite for all the family, ballet aficionados and first-time attendees to a ballet, La Fille mal Gardee promises to delight audiences in Nottingham when it is performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet for the first time ever at the Theatre Royal.

This production of one of the most popular ballets in Birmingham Royal Ballet’s repertoire, received its world premiere on January 28, 1960, at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Created by Frederick Ashton, one of the most influential dance figures of the 20th century, the funny, tender and true production has gone from strength to strength in the years since its creation.

When country beauty, Lise, falls in love with farm lad, Colas, she is about to upset the apple cart.

Her mother, Widow Simone, has her own ideas about who her daughter should marry. Enter Thomas, a wealthy and pompous vineyard owner. And Alain, his rich son- attractive as a potato, smart as a turnip and the proud possessor of two left feet. Now sit back and enjoy as each of this merry crew try to meet their heart’s desires with predictably hilarious results.

Ever popular because of its simple, engaging story, wonderful wit and pulsating passion, La Fille mal gardée remains a firm favourite for all the family.

Accompanying Birmingham Royal Ballet will be the company’s full-time orchestra, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, under the musical directorship of Koen Kessels. The Royal Ballet Sinfonia is Britain’s busiest ballet orchestra, playing for Birmingham Royal Ballet’s wide-ranging programme in the UK and abroad.

Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée is the classic family treat danced by some of the world’s greatest dancers. With Osbert Lancaster’s fairytale sets and amazing costumes, and Ferdinand Hérold’s irresistibly melodic, sparkling and beautiful original score, this is an unforgettable evening of entertainment for all ages.

The French title translates literally, and clumsily, as The Badly Guarded Girl but, when translation is necessary, is more commonly known in English as The Wayward Daughter.

La Fille mal gardée is one of the oldest ballets still in the repertory, the original version having been premiered in 1789.

Tickets to see the production are from £35 - £15 plus concessions, available from and box office 0115 989 5555
