Great British Bake Off presenter Mel Giedroyc will be heading the cast of a new comic musical coming to Derby Theatre later in the year.
The Mercury Theatre, Colchester, and Derby Theatre co-production of The Opinion Makers can be seen there from November 13-23.
Known to millions as one of the presenters on the popular Great British Bake Off, Mel Giedroyc shot to fame in the 1990s as one half of comedy duo Mel and Sue.
She will play the role of Lassiter in this show.
Mel Giedroyc is also known for her writing work on French and Saunders, while her acting credits include Miranda, Light Lunch, The Vicar of Dibley and Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.
Her stage credits include Cinderella at the Lyric Hammersmith, New Boy at Trafalgar Studios and Eurobeat! The Musical at the Novello.
The Opinion Makers has been penned by critically acclaimed writing team Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon and is directed by the Mercury Theatre’s artistic director, Daniel Buckroyd.
Mel Giedroyc said: “I’m thrilled to join the cast. The Opinion Makers is a brilliantly funny show and I’m sure audiences in Derby will absolutely love it.”
Daniel Buckroyd added: “Mel is a fantastic comedy actress with a huge breadth of experience. She’s certain to add a huge amount to the role of Lassiter and we’re delighted to have her on board.”
Mitchell and Nixon have assembled a chaotic cast of characters for this brand new musical comedy, centred on the incompetent team at Fernsby Market Research. As they take on the challenge of rebranding the cure-all Dr. Campbell’s Lotion, Lassiter and her colleague, Penhall play a high-stakes gamble, creating all of the market research over many pints in the local pub. Along the way we encounter a Scottish laird with a dark secret, his glamorous American gold-digger wife; and an insane Home Secretary-in-waiting.
