The Centenary of the First World War is to be celebrated in Buxton through contemporary words and music.

‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’ is the title of a performance by pianist Ian Buckle and reader Philip Holland at St John’s Church on Sunday at 7.30pm, which will support Blythe House Hospice.

It will include poetry by Wilfred Owen, Philip Larkin, Geoffrey Hill and Andrew Motion, and music by Ravel, Webern, Elgar, Ireland, Bridge and Bainton.

Tickets, priced £10, will be available on the door on the evening, or in advance from the Buxton Opera House box office on 0845 127 2190.

This event will be raising funds towards bringing the Hallé Orchestra to the opera house for a fourth charity gala concert in aid of the Chapel-en-le-Frith hospice.
